Every Apple store is at it's own discretion concerning repair issues on out of warranty repairs. I can say being diplomatic and polite goes a long way in trying to win over the genius bar. I can also suggest the first floor genius is going to repeat the company line that it does not qualify—here you can ask for a manager in an effort to present your facts of your case. If the manager has a sympathetic ear there is always a possibility; however if your Mac was under the extended warranty AppleCare there would be no issue—this is the quandary.

I will add to continue to run current through the battery, you continue the potential of further expansion, and further damage to trackpad, keyboard, logic board—not a pretty picture, your $500 and 4 weeks might be a deal in comparison.
